Special Events and Festivals in the Costa Brava

Your holiday to the Costa Brava will be fantastic no matter which month you plan it. However, your holiday will be much more memorable if you are able to experience one of the many special events and festivals in the Costa Brava during your holiday.

Below are four of the biggest, and most popular festivals in the Costa Brava.

Santa Susanna Carnival Celebrations

During this celebration, entire towns take to the streets to partake in the festivities. Dancing, feasting, games and competitions, and the “Sardana” folk dance make this one of the special events in the Costa Brava that you won’t want to miss.

Saint Joan (St John’s Day – Midsummer’s eve)

This event takes place on June 24th, and is primarily held at the main beaches. Lots of parties and fireworks makes for lots of fun for the entire family. Traditionally, this event includes “special coca” (a traditional Spanish cake) that is eaten with cava. A famous fireworks competition is held during this festival in the city of Blanes.

Carnestoltes (Lent)

This event takes place during February and March. This event starts on the eve of Lent, and continues for up to a week. It includes many processions of floats and locals dresses in traditional outfits. Massive paellas are cooked at the major beaches, and are served with fine local wines.

Divendres Sant & Dilluns de Pascua (Easter and Good Friday)

This is the easter celebration that you are familiar with, but with a Costa Brava twist. This festival starts with “palm leaf processions” on Friday, and extends through the next Sunday where traditional meals are cooked and served.

You’ll have fun in the Costa Brava no matter what you decide to do. However, try to plan your holiday during one of these special events, as it will make your entire holiday much more memorable for your entire family!
